Last week, we went glamping in Dubbo Zoo. What is glamping you ask? It is like camping but in a more glamourous way. Instead of a tent, we stayed in a lodge, a cabin-like accommodation, in a zoo to experience the wild life. I booked this 3-days 2-nights staycation as a birthday present for my partner and I to be away from the hustle-and-bustle of Sydney for a weekend.
Taronga Western Plains Zoo, also known as Dubbo Zoo, is located in Dubbo, in central west of New South Wales. The zoo is a long drive of approximately 5-6 hours from Sydney, Canberra and Newcastle. Hence, to make it worth the journey there from Sydney, we booked for 2 nights instead of just one.
I chose the African-style “Zoofari Lodge” accommodation for our stay that is nestled behind the African Savannah at Dubbo Zoo, overlooking a paddock in which giraffes, zebras and elands roam.
We got the Animal View Lodges that fits up to four people. The cabin comes with a king bed and sofa bed. The place is like a proper hotel room with bedding, linen, towels, mini-bar, fridge and a deck outfront with table and chairs for outdoor resting.
Won’t you want to wake up in the morning to this view?
Our accommodation came with admission tickets into Dubbo Zoo and exclusive behind the scenes tours with a Zoofari guide. We didn’t even have to leave the zoo to look for food because we were served buffet for breakfast as well as African style banquet for dinner and dessert.
There is a Guest House nearby our lodges where we went for dinner and drinks. Besides enjoying a cup of coffee in the lounge area, we also went for a dip in their swimming pool, which we found out later that it was filled with saltwater. Refreshing!
Ahhh.. what a lovely day to sit back and relax on the deck with a cup of coffee, watching the animals meander across the savannah. It was an ultimate wild experience stay but in the comfort of a nice cozy cabin.
